Accurate and timely assessment and reporting helps to improve student learning through more targeted support, assistance and enrichment of student learning experiences, while keeping parents/carers informed on student achievement and progress.
Assessment is designed to:
– Provide students with feedback about their work so they can improve their skills and knowledge.
– Provide parents and guardians with feedback on their child’s achievement and progress.
– Evaluate and report on student progress against state-wide achievement standards.
Assessment at Yarrabing Secondary College
The following three areas will be used to assess and report on student achievement:
– Student work habits through teacher observation of day-to-day behaviours.
– Student work submitted for Key Learning Tasks (KLTs).
– Level of key skills and knowledge students display in their classwork and assessments as outlined in the Victorian Curriculum Achievement Levels.
Reporting at Yarrrabing Secondary College
The purpose of our reporting cycles are to communicate to parents/carers and students a summary of student achievement in the 3 areas listed above.
The reporting cycles include communication through:
– Key learning tasks in a continuous reporting cycle.
– Progress reports at the end of term 1 and 3.
– Parent Student Teacher Conferences in term 1 and 3.
– Semester reports at the end of term 2 and 4.
Key Learning Tasks (KLTs)
A continuous reporting system operates through Compass to provide real time information to parents about how learning is progressing. Students are partners in their own learning, setting goals, monitoring progress, and acting on feedback as they complete learning tasks throughout the school year. Parents/guardians are encouraged to be partners in this process by monitoring assessment results via Compass and supporting students to act on feedback and suggestions for improvement.
Compass Learning Tasks are used by teachers to provide continuous and timely feedback on assessment tasks to both students and parents/guardians. Feedback for each task will include a grade and a comment. Key Learning Tasks (KLTs) will be labelled as “Assessment”. Teachers may also use Compass learning tasks to track classwork and other general classroom tasks.
Progress Reports are completed mid-semester, at the end of term 1 and term 3, and report student work habits. The work habits are based on Yarrabing Secondary College’s four core values.
These values are:
Respect – We respect ourselves, our school and each other, and understand that our attitudes and behaviours have an impact on the people around us.
Responsibility – We take on responsibility by being personally accountable for, and in control of our actions.
High Expectations – We set ourselves high expectations and strive to achieve success in everything we do, to the best of our ability, and embrace every opportunity that is offered.
Collaboration – We come together to collaborate and contribute our expertise and thoughts for the benefit of a shared objective or project. Collaboration brings people together and enables positive relationships to flourish.
Work Habits | Corresponding School Value |
---|---|
Submits completed work on time | Responsibility |
Uses class time productively | Respect |
Arrives on time and ready for learning | High Expectations |
Contributes to a positive learning environment | Collaboration |
Assessment scale for work habits:
Consistently | Usually | Sometimes | Rarely | Never | Not Applicable |
Parent-Student-Teacher conferences provide an opportunity for parents to meet their child’s teachers, share information about their child’s progress, interests and needs and discuss their child’s learning. They provide an opportunity for teachers to understand more about the student and provide an opportunity for the co-creation of clear learning and behaviour goals to guide the next steps in student learning and achievement. Students are an integral part of the conferences and therefore their attendance is required for all conferences.
Semester reports are issued at the end of each semester and are available to view or download from Compass. Semester reports include information for each subject about the student’s work habits and a summary of achievement on Key Learning Tasks. For Year 7 to 10 students, both achievement and progress against the Victorian Curriculum standards are also included and describe student performance against age-related achievement standards.
